Podere Ciona Wines
Podere Ciona is small production estate, whose vineyards
extend over an area of approx. 4 hectares (10 acres). Orientated south-southwest
with soils primarily composed of weathered sandstone, the vineyards are planted
with the traditional Sangiovese for Chianti Classico, Merlot and
Alicante Bouschet for IGT wines. The estate is dedicated to the highest
quality and adheres to:
- Earth-friendly viticultural practices in respect of
the environment, the "green harvest" (the thinning of the bunches), defoliation
around the grape bunches for better exposure, hand selection of the grapes
during harvest and yields kept low.
- Careful vinification techniques
including a triage after de-stemming and before crushing, controlled
temperature fermentation with selected yeasts and long maceration periods.
-
Patient ageing in French oak barriques and tonneaux (225 lt. and
500 lt., respectively) - a mixture of medium-toast Allier, Vosges,
Nevers and Troncais oaks - or 30 Hl. French oak vats (all
Allier), depending on the varietal and the wine produced.
The
internationally renowned enologist Dr. Stefano Chioccioli -
http://www.stefanochioccioli.it/ - supervises the grape
growing and the wine-making. Visitors and guests, by appointment (+39 0577

tour of the cellars and a tasting of the estate's wines.
